Substance Use Screening (DAST-10)
The Drug Abuse Screening Test-10 (Skinner, 1982) is 10 yes/no items about consequences of drug use over the past 12 months (not alcohol and not tobacco): use, control, blackouts, guilt, complaints from loved ones, harm to the family, crime, withdrawal, medical problems. It complements the CAGE (alcohol): the CAGE asks about alcohol, the DAST about substances. Item 3 is reverse-scored ("can always stop" — "no" = a point). It's a screening, not a dependence diagnosis.
Before you start
This is a screening for drug-related problems over the past 12 months, not a dependence diagnosis. It doesn't cover alcohol (the CAGE exists for that) or tobacco. Item 3 is reverse-scored: "no" = a point. A high score is a reason for a full assessment by a specialist (addiction specialist/psychotherapist), not a self-diagnosis. Answer honestly for yourself, not "as you should."
The questions concern the past 12 months. By "drugs" — any narcotic substances other than alcohol and tobacco, including non-medical use of prescription drugs. Item 3 is special — answer by meaning.
