cognitive bias / heuristic

Illusion of transparency

This is not a diagnosis or a personality trait. A heuristic is a normal shortcut of the mind; a bias arises where it leads to a systematically wrong judgement. If you recognise yourself here, it is an invitation to gently check rather than to label yourself.

What it is

It feels as if one's internal state — anxiety, irritation, joy — is obvious to those around, although outwardly it shows much less.

How it arises and is maintained

We feel our own state from the inside in all its shades and project this vividness outward. The distortion arises when internal obviousness is taken for external visibility. It is sustained because our own emotions come with bodily sensations that are vivid to us but unavailable to those around.

How it may look

  • ««It is obvious how nervous I am» — in fact from the outside it is barely visible.»
  • ««Everyone can tell I am bored» — the other person may not notice.»

Soft signs in yourself

  • Before a performance it feels as if «the whole room can see my fear».
  • The other person is credited with knowing your emotions without words.
  • It is hard to believe that outwardly you look calmer than you feel.
  • After a conversation you replay for a long time «how it was all over your face».

Questions for a Socratic dialogue

  1. What is actually visible from the outside — and what is only to me from the inside?
  2. If I asked a loved one how I looked, what would they answer?
  3. Has there been a case when it seemed everything was visible, and then it turned out it was not?
  4. What changes if I assume that those around see me as much calmer?

Self-directed exercise

Compare inner and outer

  1. Describe your internal state in a recent tense situation.
  2. Write down what, in your view, was visible from the outside.
  3. Ask someone who was there how you looked — and compare.
  4. Through the day, notice the illusion of transparency and remind yourself that the inner is not equal to the outer.

Core beliefs it may be linked to

  • ««My emotions are on display for everyone».»
  • ««If I feel something, it will definitely be noticed».»
  • ««Hiding one's state is pointless».»
  • ««Those around read me like an open book».»
